F-gas Regulation Controls, Ireland

F-Gas use in Ireland

Fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), including HFCs, PFCs, and SF6, contribute to human-accelerated climate change. These gases are controlled globally by the Kyoto Protocol and further regulated in the EU by the F-gas Regulation (EC) No. 517/2014, which aims to reduce EU F-gas emissions by two-thirds by 2030. The regulation controls emissions through leak checks, proper maintenance, end-of-life recovery, bans where alternatives exist, and limits on the total amount sold in the EU.

F-gases are primarily used in refrigeration, air-conditioning, fire protection, and other industrial applications, often as replacements for ozone-depleting substances. In addition to the main regulation, several implementing EU regulations address specific requirements like leak checking, certification of personnel and companies, labeling, and reporting formats.

F-gas Asset Tagging

Meeting labelling standards for F-gas equipment in Ireland

Refrigeration asset tagging refers to the labelling requirements mandated by F-gas safety regulations. This labelling serves several crucial purposes: identification of the F-gas is use; quantity or mass of the f-gas inside the asset in kg (including the initial charge by the manufacturer); and global warming potential (GWP). This metric indicates the gas’s heat-trapping capacity compared to carbon dioxide and must be stated on the label.

Other features that should be stated on the tag are the CO2 equivalent metric (the weight of the F-gas in equivalent tonnes of carbon dioxide – CO2e is calculated by multiplying the mass of the gas by its GWP); and its hermetically sealed status. The information shown on the tag will inform the engineer of how regularly the asset needs to be checked for leaks and other safety checks.

Many businesses in Ireland still have incorrectly tagged refrigeration, air conditioning, and other F-gas assets.

To avoid penalties or potential hazards with your F-gas equipment, contact us to arrange an engineer callout. Specialising in industrial refrigeration, pharma, and food processing sectors, our clients include manufacturers, hospitals, dairy farms and other agri-businesses, and commercial premises with f-gas assets on site.
